Puppy Grooming – Why & When?

At Precious Poochies we know that the first time ever for a puppy in a dog grooming salon is a very important moment, similar to when a child gets their first haircut. They don’t understand why they are there, and what is going to happen to them. Working with puppies can also try the patience of the most skilled dog groomers.And your initial approach can have a lifelong effect on a pup, be it positive or negative. The experiences that they have in their first months of their life, they won’t forget.

That’s why at Precious Poochies in Edwinstowe, we take a very personal step by step approach on the first visit of our new young clients to our salon. We try everything that we have to in order for them to have the best experience ever. During the first grooming session, the main idea is to familiarise puppies with the process.

When the puppy first arrives at Precious Poochies, we start by slowly introducing ourselves to the little one via speaking to him in a soft, soothing voice, petting and cuddling him and playing with him for a bit, to gain his trust, and to enable him to regard grooming as a fun, enjoyable experience. Above, all, patience is key. Then we let the young pup to make a good sniff along the salon.

Furthermore, the grooming sessions initially should be kept short and sweet. We high recommend initially sticking with the following services the first few times the puppies are being groomed:
1. Bathing
1. Light brush out
2. Nail trim
3. Ear cleaning
4. Light trim where especially needed, such as around the face and feet.

And the last thing that we high recommend is not to wait until the 6 months for a first puppy groom. After they are fully vaccinated, they can come in for a first Precious Poochies experience.

Precious Poochies are now proud to be members of the British Dog Groomers Association. The British Dog Groomers’ Association represents it’s grooming members by providing education, training and support.

As a member, all our customers can be safe in the knowledge that they can expect the highest standards of customer care and animal welfare.

What you can expect from Precious Poochies, as a PIF pet groomer

  1. A professional, polite and warm welcome when you enter the salon and meet your groomer;
  2. A clean, tidy and well-maintained salon environment;
  3. A discussion with your groomer, when you arrive, about your pet, and its coat condition, the general health of your pet and your pet’s behavior;
  4. A pre-groom consultation on the best grooming procedure for your dog, and information about what can and can’t be achieved;
  5. Information from your groomer about your pet’s skin and coat condition and how to care for it between grooms;
  6. Communication from your groomer keeping you informed immediately if issues arise or problems are found during your pet’s time with the groomer, over and above what was discussed at the pre-groom consultation;
  7. Reassurance that your groomer is fully insured, providing protection for you and your pet whilst in their care;
  8. Reassurance that your groomer has a duty of care to your pet throughout its stay and that the groomer abides by the 5 animal needs as set out in the Animal Welfare Act;
  9. Reassurance that your groomer will only carry out grooming procedures that they have the experience to undertake;
  10. An expectation that your groomer will be first aid trained, or will have access to a trained pet first aider or veterinary surgeon in the event of an accident or emergency.

Your groomer is a member of the British Dog Groomers’ Association (BDGA), a division of the Pet Industry Federation (PIF), the largest UK trade association for pet businesses. Your groomer abides by the PIF membership charter and the BDGA’s code of conduct.

The Pet Industry Federation offers a dispute resolution service should you find that your groomer is not abiding by this code

This is our new property in Edwinstowe which will open as a state of the art dog grooming salon at the end of February 2018.

The realisation of a live long dream to work with dogs and offer an exceptional grooming experience for dogs and owner alike, Precious Poochies will offer a unique experience for all clients. Based in the heart of Edwinstowe, close to Sherwood Forest and within a short commute of Worksop, Ollerton, Mansfield and Newark we aim to be the area’s Premier Grooming Salon.

We are now taking booking from 1st March 2018, and offering a 20% discount on all appointments booked in January. The price guide here outlines our pricing for each breed.
